About

Beth A. Ferri, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in Disability Studies and Inclusive Education at Syracuse University. She is also Associate Faculty in Women’s & Gender Studies and coordinates the Doctoral program in Special Education. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in adapting instruction for diverse learners and critical issues in dis/ability and inclusion, as well as several doctoral seminars in Disability Studies. Her research interests include inclusive education, disability studies, critical pedagogy and methods, and narrative inquiry.

Professor Ferri has published widely on the intersection of race and disability, including articles in Teachers College Record, the International Journal of Inclusive Education, Remedial & Special Education, Journal of Learning Disabilities, Gender & Education, Disability Studies Quarterly, Disability & Society, and the Journal of African American History.  Her book, written with David J. Connor, Reading Resistance: Discourses of Exclusion in Desegregation and Inclusion Debates, examines archival newspaper sources to show how problematic rhetorics of race and dis/ability were used to maintain and justify segregated education after the historic Brown v. Board of Education decision. She is currently working on two new books: one on Homeschooling and Special Needs and the other an edited collection on the intersections of Disability Studies in Education and Law titled, Righting Educational Wrongs with Arlene Kanter.

She was recognized in 2003 as an Outstanding Young Scholar in Disability Studies in Education.
